Colds, flu, and other respiratory illnesses tend to be more prevalent during the colder months. With more people spending time indoors, viruses can spread more easily. Additionally, the cold, dry air can lower the body's ability to resist infections. Here are some natural supplements and remedies you may want to have on hand to keep you and yours as healthy and happy as possible this season.
āļø Vitamin D is a fat-soluble nutrient that many people are deficient in, especially when our sunlight exposure decreases - you know, right about now. Vitamin D reduces inflammation and supports your immune defense. I like taking it in a liquid format, and usually use brands like Land Art or CanPrev.
š N-acetylcysteine (also known as NAC) offers significant immune benefits by acting as a precursor to glutathione, one of the body's most powerful antioxidants. NAC has been shown to modulate inflammation, helping to maintain a balanced immune response. Additionally, it can improve respiratory health by thinning mucus, making it valuable for conditions like chronic bronchitis or respiratory infections. Its antiviral properties and ability to support overall cellular health further enhance its role in strengthening immunity. Consider NAC in cases of lingering coughs following a cold or Covid, COPD, asthma, or recurring sinus infections. My family takes CanPrevās NAC year round.

š« Elderberry, naturally rich in antioxidant and Vitamin C, have the ability to inhibit viruses. It can be taken prophylactically throughout the cold and flu season, and in increased doses if you fall ill. I swear by Suro, an organic brand out of QuĆ©bec. They have a wide variety of products such as capsules, syrups and more.
šZinc is essential for immune support as it prevents foreign pathogens from entering the body, and reduces inflammation. Itās a great preventative measure, but can also help shorten the duration of a cold. I like CanPrevās Zinc Bisglycinate.
šÆManuka Honey is 100% worth its significant price tag. Regular honey this is not! Hailing from New Zealand, manuka honey has antibacterial and antiviral properties. I take a spoon a day if Iām feeling run down, or if I start to feel the slightest tickle. My preferred brands are Wedderspoon and Flora.
š¦ Probiotics are essential for microbiome support. In our household these are a year-round staple; I consider them essential for cold & flu season. Living Alchemy's Your Flora Probiotic Family is 45+ diverse strain, kefir-kombucha fermented soybean symbiotic with probiotics, prebiotics, and postbiotics. Great the entire family (ages 6 and up). If you have trouble taking pills, you can open up these capsules and add to water - they taste good!
šæ Eucalyptus Essential Oil makes a wonderful addition to your diffuser or shower. 5-10 drops will keep your sinuses and breathways clear. Eucalyptus Radiata is better for upper respiratory issues (think sinus congestion, sniffles), while Eucalyptus Globulus/Blue Gum is indicated for lower respiratory (lung) concerns. QuĆ©becās Divine Essence is the gold standard in aromatherapy, IMHO. Their facility is certified by GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) and Eco-Cert, and their essential oils are Health Canada-certified.
If you want to give any of these natural remedies a try, speak with your health practitioner or pharmacist to figure out the best dosage for you, and to make sure you donāt have any contraindications.
Yours in health,
Miriam
